Etna erupted in spectacular fashion on the 5th January 2012 and again with another paroxysmal eruption on the 18th March 2012 after the previous years showing in May 2011.
Etna last erupted in September 2004 beginning at a height of around 2300 metres above sea level, lasting for several months, producing lava at temperatures of up to 1100 degrees Celcius. Previous recent eruptions occurred in 2002, 2001, 1999 and 1986 confirming Etna’s active status which is one of the best documented in the world.
The summit of Mount Etna stands at 3350 metres, or 10, 991 feet and forms part of a volcanic chain running from western Italy to eastern Greece. Located in the south west of the island the mountain dominates Catania which is the second largest city in Sicily, today old lava flows cover much of the surface of Italy’s biggest volcano.
Etna’s most prominent feature is the vast horse shoe on its eastern side which is around ten kilometers long and five kilometers wide. There are two main manifestations of eruption which classically occur on Etna, explosive ones of a persistent nature in the craters and from fissures which open downward from the summit.
Surrounding the volcano is the Parco dell’Etna (Etna Park) which covers over two hundred square miles and includes nearly twenty towns. The overall height is known to change after eruptions and it has been known for lava flows to reach as far as the sea.
During the winter months it is possible to ski on Etna and when the snows melt there are many wonderful walks on the woodland slopes and on the smaller surrounding peaks. Flora and fauna are abundant in the protected parkland and there is some stunning scenery.
