Confiserie Florian Pont du Loup is the Cote d’Azur answer to Willy Wonker and one of the regions best known producers of traditional Provencal confiserie.
So for those of you wondering what confiserie is think Willy Wonker and your more or less there. Visitors to the Florian establishment at the entrance to the dramatic gorge du loup can take a tour and see the production process in action of some of the tastiest goodies you will ever come across.
The big confiserie specialty of the region is fruit confit which is sugar preserved fruit. It is a long winded process which results in beautiful whole fruit preserved in glossy shining sugar and you will often see smart shops in places like Cannes and Antibes with amazing displays of colourful glazed fruit in the window.
Jams made from unusual sources such as rose petals, violets and locally grown mandarins are another of the big specialties. My daughter can still remember the first time I brought home Florian rose petal jam about 25 years ago, she stills loves it now.
The big hit with the children is the sweet production that’s where things get Willy Wonker and I must admit when we tasted a freshly produced sweet which was still warm it was heavenly.
The production methods are traditional and fun to watch, the visit doesn’t take too long but it’s worth going early as it can get really busy. You can taste and buy at the end of the free tour (there are multi lingual guides).
For more photos of Florian and the delicious products they make see our Florian facebook album page.
For more information see confiserieflorian.com and you will see they also have outlets in Cannes and Nice, though I think the Pont du Loup set up is the best and you can visit the gorge whilst your at it.
