Chateau de l’Emperi in Salon de Provence was once the biggest castle in all the Provence region, in the south of France.
Back in the 9th century the first fortification of the Puech rock which dominates the town, took place. During the 12th and 13th centuries the castle became the largest fortress in the area and enabled Salon to protect the salt trade route which spanned the Mediterranean, Atlantic and the Adriatic.
In the chateau de L’Emperi the archbishops of Arles reigned and so did emperors of Rome then the French Kings. During the French revolution it served as a barracks and a formidable jail.
Now a museum of Art and Military history the Chateau de L’Emperi also opens its doors to theatre and concerts during the summer months.
