Cannes Regates Royales - Panerai trophy takes place between 22nd and 29th September.
As the intense heat of the summer begins to wane at last in the Cote d'Azur of France and the September breeze begins to come to life one can't help but begin to think of the coming sailing regatta season.
My favourite is the Cannes Regates Royales - Panerai trophy event which features so many beautiful old boats that are so magnificent when in full sail, no one can fail to be impressed.
As the boats prepare in the old harbour of Cannes which nestles below the clock tower of Le Suquet, the beautiful old part of Cannes up on the hill, there is a feeling of great excitement and professional preparation. The quay bustles with life as crews make last checks and tourists marvel at the shining splendour of the beautiful vessels many of which are around 100 years old.
Then the great moment as the flotilla of boats round the harbour wall and the sails start to go up as the boats tack towards La Theoule sur mer (where even today a skeleton of a large sailing boat lies smashed on the rocks, a reminder that the Mediterranean can kick back hard) then off they go towards the picturesque Lerins islands.
The final sail past of the day, running parallel with the La Croisset is a sight which engrains itself in the memory for days to come. Safe to say I'm really looking forward to seeing the Cannes regatta this year and hope to drop in and see the follow on event at Saint Tropez as well.
