Bonifacio Corsica world cliff diving series 2012 took place last week and what a spectacular event that was.
Corsica is one of those places where the scenery is quite breathtaking, putting it way above many other destinations for that alone. The Corsican coast has numerous varied beauty spots but the jewel in the crown is Bonifacio, which is quite unique.
The southern coast of Corsica around Bonifacio is a geological phenomenon, huge white, incredibly weathered limestone cliffs rise and overhang the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean.
They are a fantastic sight enjoyed by visitors either from the outer walls of the old town of Bonifacio, or the Venetian fortress which dominates the bay or even from the beautiful coastal footpath which winds along the cliff tops to the lighthouse. Many choose a boat trip to see the cliffs and caves to best advantage.
The Red Bull world cliff diving competition takes the Bonifacio spectacle to another level. Plunging down into the deep waters below from a precarious platform high at the top of the cliffs, professional divers compete to become the world champion.
After their dive they take the “secret” tunnel back up through the cliffs to prepare for their next incredible acrobatic plunge. You have to see it to believe it. This major world event made national news in France putting it firmly on the calendar.
