The Aquitaine (now part of Nouvelle Aquitaine) coast offers miles and miles of wide, soft sandy beaches stretching down from the northern tip near Soulac all the way south past the tidal bay of Arcachon, famous for its oysters, beyond the incredible Pilat dune which is the highest in Europe, down past the vast nudist and naturist beaches to the surfing paradise of Hossegor.

Behind the beaches are the fabled vineyards of the Medoc in the north, an area which produces the best red wines on earth which can reach prices in the many thousands of pounds. Further south is vast sweet-smelling pine forests which are perfect for cycling and walking, amidst which are enormous almost sea-like lakes with sandy beaches which provide excellent, wave-free bathing and water sports.

The Landes canals are a pretty feature which can be navigated by boat and are abundant with wildlife. Fishing in the bay of Arcachon, the lakes and the sea provides great sport and often lunch! The local cuisine is dominated by fresh seafood and the Aquitaine coast is also renowned for its duck dishes such as magret de canard.

There are chic resorts such as Cap Ferret and Arcachon as well as first-class shopping facilities in Bordeaux which has a rich cultural heritage and is ideal for a day out. Along the coast, there is Biarritz along with many delightful seaside resorts such as Montalivet, Biscarrosse and Mimizan.

Travel

Access from the channel ports is easy via the motorway network and there are international airports at Bordeaux (BOD), La Rochelle (LRH) and Biarritz (BAQ). Flight operators to Aquitaine include Ryanair, Easyjet and Flybe.

The Aquitaine climate is generally lovely and sunny although the southern area near the Pyrenees is prone to some rain on occasions.
