The city of Angouleme is set on a hill overlooking the valley of the river Charente. Protected by stone ramparts the terracotta tiled houses Angouleme was ravaged by conflict for many years, particularly during the holy wars. In the 19th century it became an important river port and eventual made its name as home of the popular French “bande dessinée” or cartoon books. Angouleme attracts many visitors who enjoy its architecture and history.
