The harbour, located at the southern end of town, around a headland, is a beautiful spot, with cafes and restaurants overlooking impressive luxury yachts and sailing boats in their moorings.

The sea front at Nice is stunning and stretches for miles; it is very popular for walks and is much frequented by folk on rollerblades. In the centre is a lovely park and large square with fountains, all beautifully lit in the evenings whilst a new, modern tramway running all the way to Villefranche enhances convenience of access.

There is an impressive chateau combined with a tropical garden, perched on the hillside at the southern end of town overlooking the bay. The beach is predominantly pebbles; however there is a new initiative which is transforming some sections with imported sand. Just by Nice airport is a large semi covered tropical gardens which are well worth a visit.

The open air market in the old town of Nice is open every day throughout the year. There is considerable emphasis on flowers stalls complemented by excellent, fresh fruit and vegetables with lots of local specialities on display. On the edge of the main market square is one of our favorite cafes for breakfast, indeed combining the market with breakfast is a great way to start the day.

The old town of Nice is a real treat, a myriad of small streets with lots of very individual, interesting shops which are very enjoyable for perusing and do offer affordable and desirable wares. The narrow, pedestrian streets flanked by beautiful old buildings, many in striking colours, nearly all with Italian style shutters, many with ornate iron railed balconies create an intimate, agreeable ambiance. The open squares with numerous open air cafes and restaurants are often frequented by musicians adding to the outdoor Mediterranean atmosphere.

Nice is a great place for eating out and there is a huge choice particularly in the old town where you can try the local treats such as “les farcies” which are a range of “stuffed” vegetables including courgettes, tomatoes and peppers. They are delicious.

Just behind Nice is the dramatic hilltop village of Eze which is very pretty, with traditional stone buildings with low vaulted ceilings creating hugely atmospheric shops, cafes and restaurants. There is a Fragonard shop and visitable production unit along with a delightful botanical gardens. The views from the village are stunning, as down below is the Mediterranean and the Villefranche peninsula. For the more adventurous there is a good 2 hour ramble up to the fort on the hill above the village from where the views are even more amazing.
