Andalusia is the setting of a spectacular grouping of whitewashed, historical villages which seem to be lost in time, with many of the age old traditions maintained to this day. Seen in the clear light of the summer sun you get the full impact of their magnificence.
The white villages are set in the Alpujarra (Las Alpujrras), a mountainous area of southern Spain, in the Andalusia region, not far from Granada. Nestling amidst the hills often within sight of each other the biggest of the white villages is Lanjaron (source of the mineral water Lanjaron) then there are Orgiva, Igijat, Laujar and Berja. The highest of them all is Trevelez which at close on 1500 metres above sea level is the highest town in Spain.
The villages are compact little mountain villages, which are really pretty, strikingly white, where the whole atmosphere is very different. Ideally you should leave early and do a little circuit and visit a number of villages to gain the real benefit of a visit to this most unusual of places.
There are generally very few people visiting in August as it is hot, however it is a good time to visit as the villages are nice and peaceful.
