The shuttle keeps rolling despite the storms
When selecting ones choice of travel you don't normally think in terms of what if the weather is bad, thankfully I did when planning my recent channel crossing.
I elected to take my car on the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle to France last week as I had experienced a few interruptions due to snow when travelling in January in recent years. It proved to be a good choice for a number of reasons.
Firstly there was a huge storm brewing which interrupted flights and whilst I don't know if the ferries were affected I certainly wouldn't have fancied being aboard ship in those seas. Yet the shuttle service under the channel was operating 100%.
Secondly I opted to set off earlier than planned from Woking because I knew the storm was coming across the country from the west and that flooding was forecast, so I wanted to avoid it if I could. I arrived at the Eurotunnel terminal with my fixed crossing ticket, not knowing if I would have to wait around for a few hours for my allotted crossing time. Nice surprise, the automated check in system at the terminal offered me a choice of earlier crossings at no extra charge, in the end I only had to wait around half an hour.
Thirdly how nice it was to arrive in France to blue skies and sunshine after day after day of grey clouds and wet weather in England with all my gear in my car and no pesky flight baggage allowances to fret about.
It is many years since I last used the shuttle and where previously my thoughts were yes it is quick and convenient but actually the ferry experience is more enjoyable I would now factor in its importance in the event of bad weather. You might want to do the same when planning for your holiday.
