Royan is a well known seaside resort, which was first and foremost a fortress designed to protect the river Gironde from invasion by the English. Scene of fierce battles between Protestants and Catholics it was not until the 19th century that holidaymakers appeared.
Beaches and coves along with a sunny climate and lots of great restaurants by the port offer plenty for the tourist.
The sea is good for swimming as well as scuba diving and the port offers all sorts of boating possibilities including a sailing school.
There are some lovely walks along the coast as well as horse riding opportunities and a large Zoo in nearby La Palmyre.
There is a market every day.
