Royan is a well-known seaside resort, which was first and foremost a fortress designed to protect the river Gironde from invasion by the English. The scene of fierce battles between Protestants and Catholics it was not until the 19th century that holidaymakers appeared.
Beaches and coves along with a sunny climate and lots of great restaurants by the port offer plenty for the tourist. To find the best beaches in Royan you can try the ones in town though they get busy in summer, the cote sauvage to the north of Royan is within easy driving, even cycling distance, here you will find miles of golden sandy beaches. The beaches at Vaux Sur Mer and Saint Palais are also popular and La Palmyre is nice and sheltered, though busy in peak periods.
Travelling to Royan is good for self-drive tourists as it is just within a day's drive of many of the channel ports. Nearest is Saint Malo 399km, then Caen 545km and Cherbourg 560km. whilst furthest is Calais 796km and the channel tunnel. You can fly directly to Bordeaux (BDX) 131km (about 1 hour and 41 minutes drive).
The climate in Royan is generally very good for enjoying the beach and the pool at you gite from May to September when it tends to be warm and sunny with some, but not too much rain.
Shopping in Royan
Royan is a fair sized town so there is a good choice of shops including a Centre Leclerc hypermarket, Intermarche, 8 a Huit grocers, Carrefour Market, bakers and fishmongers. Stylish clothes shops such as Celio, Boutique Nanik and hairdressers. Also present are the main banks, Maison de la Presse (paper shop), sports shops such as Intersport and garages.
The sea is good for swimming as well as scuba diving and the port offers all sorts of boating possibilities including a sailing school.
There are some lovely walks along the coast as well as horse riding opportunities and a large Zoo in nearby La Palmyre.

Have a flutter in the Casino Barriere de Royan, visit the unusual Notre-Dame de Royan or take a tour of the small but interesting Musee de Royan where you will discover works by Picasso who fled the bombings in Paris in 1939 and settled in Royan for a while. Le Parc de l'Estuaire in nearby Saint George de Didonne offers lovely walks along the sea cliffs and allows you to discover the Gironde estuary and the forest. Les Jardins du Monde in Royan offer beautiful flowers in the orchid house where butterflies delight, Tuscan gardens and more (though at a price).
The top five restaurants in and near Royan
The Spagho in nearby Saint George de Didonne offers excellent Italian food. At La Regaline in Saint Palais Sur Mer which is just a short drive to the west, you can find very good French food at a reasonable price. The L'Aquarelle in Royan is an establishment where you can benefit from the talents of chef Taffard who knows how to put the locally caught fresh fish and seafood to best use. Or go along to Le Flandre in Saint Palais Sur Mer for excellent French food. If its Ice cream you're after then go to the Lopez in Royan.
