Record snowfalls in the Pyrenees this year. Coupled with well priced ski passes and accommodation make it the ski destination to consider for your next ski holiday.
The French Pyrenees have long held a reputation for good value ski holidays in part due to an inferior snow record to that of the Alps. That perspective may just be changing after the bumper snow falls this winter.
We were treated to images on television of some resorts in the Pyrenees where there was so much snow it was actually becoming a problem. The snow was so deep that they were struggling to get ready for the resort opening as the lifts themselves were buried deep in snow and that was the top cable, in other words the whole thing!
Indeed the authoritative newspaper La Figaro ran an article in January pointing out that the French Pyrenees resort of Cauterets had overtaken the world record for the amount of snow falling in a ski resort, with a massive 5 metres. Some feat for an area with a supposedly mediocre snow record, which led to resorts in the area being kept open until the middle of April.
Snow is tricky to predict and clearly if you want to book up early and be more or less sure of reliable snow then head high to an alpine resort such as Les Deux Alpes or a 3 Valleys resort.
If you are able to be a bit more flexible then you should keep an eye on the snow reports for the Pyrenees because if it is anything like this year then you can get yourself some great skiing at reasonable prices and still enjoy all that lovely French food and wine that is so much a part of a ski holiday in France.
If you are looking for a ski apartment in the Pyrenees then we can help as we have a good range in ski apartments in Saint Lary, one of the top resorts in the area.
