Mother Temple of Besakih, Bali, Indonesia is the largest, most important and most holy of the Agama Hindi Dharma temples on the beautiful island of Bali.
Agama Hindi Dhama is the Indonesian version of Hindu practiced in Bali by over ninety percent of the islands population.
Located at Basakih, a village on the slopes of Mount Agung, the main volcano on Bali, in the east of the island. The temple is comprised of 22 temples which are spread over terraces on different levels, with the principal Meru spire, Pura Penatara Agung, which houses the lotus throne, at the top. The temple complex is based on the principal that the mountain is sacred and the temples draw one spiritually upwards.
Originally founded in the 14th century the Mother Temple of Basakih has survived numerous eruptions of the volcano including the most recent in the nineteen sixties. The entrance fee is around 15,000 rupiah per person. The Mother Temple of Basakih is one of the principal attractions of Bali.
