Les Calanques, Cote d Azur, France, begin just to the east of Marseilles and continue along the coast to Cassis for about 20 kilometres.
An area of outstanding natural beauty which is best explored by boat to appreciate the full splendor of the white limestone gorges, rich flaura and fauna and splendid, azur blue sea, the colour of which is accentuated within the Calanques. There are numerous boat trips departing from Cassis or the Vieux Port in Marseille between April and November, costing around 25€ per adult and 18€ per child. A boat trip to the Calanques is a memorable trip usually lasting about five hours.
You can also walk along a number of the Calanques although you should be wary as the heat of the sun reflects off the sea and the white cliffs and as a consequence you either need to cover up or use adequate sun-block and don’t forget to take plenty of water. The walks can be quite long and the terrain rugged.

Many people like to drive to a spot close to the head of one of the Calanques and walk just a short distance in then enjoy swimming off the rocks and a picnic or a siesta under the shade of the sweet smelling Mediterranean pines.
