The Heraklion region of Central Crete offers much in its’ own right whilst simultaneously offering easy access to be the western and eastern extremities of the island. In many ways it is ideal for the first time visitor who wants to explore and see what the island has to offer in a general sense. Most of our villas in the area have private swimming pools and lie in and around the many pretty villages, all within easy driving distance of the coast. 

The main capital of Heraklion (Irakleio) lies on the north coast and just to the west of the town is the islands main airport. If you don’t want to drive too far from the airport this is a good area to choose or you may prefer to take the relatively easy drive south and try one of the beautiful villas we offer on the south coast overlooking the Libyan sea.

Heraklion (Irakleio) is the islands capital and as host of the major airport Heraklion occupies a pivotal central location on the north coast of the island. Today the historical city of Heraklion is a thriving, busy place which still has lots to offer both in the town and surrounding locality and we are pleased to offer a good range of villas and apartments in this area.Historically Heraklion has been an import habitation since Neolithic times.

There is plenty of evidence of the Ventian occupation during the 13th century when it was known as Candia, the capital of the Aegean and further back in time it was the main port of the Minoan empire. This rich history is reflected in the abundance of Venetian architecture including the city walls and fortress.In the very centre of Heraklion there is a pedestrian zone with shops and cafes orientated around the Morosini fountain, nearby is the Parco El Greco named after the islands most famous artist.

To the north lies the harbour dominated by its dramatic Venetian fortress. To the south east is the Plateau Kornarou where the 16th century Bembo drinking fountain depicts a headless roman statue next to which is a converted Turkish pump house serving coffee. Running centre to east is the Daidalou pedestrian walkway which is good for cafes and restaurants. Just north of the eastern end of Diadalou is the tourist office and the Archaeological museum which houses the worlds most important collection of Minoan artifacts.The main beaches in the Heraklion area lie to the west and east of the town.

Sites to visit nearby include the 1,000 room palace of Knosos, built around 1900 BC is undoubtably the principal archeaological site to visit on the island. It has been superbly excavated and restored and offers a wonderful insight into a race around which developed the myth of the Minotaur. Down on the south coast overlooking the Messara Plain is Phaestos which is another important Minoan palace.

A further palace lies at the foot of Mount Giouchtas in the farming area of Archanes which is swathed with olive groves and vineyards. To the east of Heraklion are the package holiday resorts of Malia which also has a less visited Minoan palace and Chersonisos where the Aqua Splash Water Park provides modern entertainment for children.
