Gourdon is one of the most beautiful Cote d’Azur villages, perched at around 650 metres overlooking the Mediterranean sea and the gorge de Loup.
From its dramatic hilltop settling Gourdon commands breathtaking views and it is one the great attractions of this fortified village which is officially classed as one of the most beautiful in France.
Visitors can enjoy wondering round the charming narrow streets where there are plenty of interesting shops specializing in authentic local products, it’s a good place to pick up a few gifts to take home. There is a hand made soap shop where you can watch the process taking place as well as a small perfumery where you can learn about the industry for which the region is famed.
There are a number of very good restaurants and the nid d’Aigle is certainly one of the most dramatically appointed, its name, which translates as the eagles nest says it all really. There is a chateau to visit and for the adventurous there is paragliding.
Alongside the village centre is a large area of parkland with mature trees offering shade, ideal for picnics and enjoying the spectacular view. There are a number of walks from Gourdon though most go either up or down quite a long way.
Gourdon is something of a must visit place, personally I love to cycle up from Grasse, it’s a very hard hill climb but the views are worth it, which accounts for why so many cyclists are to be found doing it.
Anyone staying in a villa in Grasse or one of the nearby villages can easily visit Gourdon, indeed its one of those places that’s worth the trip from wherever you might be on a villa holiday in Cote d’Azur.
