Gorge du Verdon is the Grand Canyon of France and attracts numerous Cote d’Azur tourists every year.
Located in the Var department the gorge is located almost due inland from Le Muy with the Lac Saint Croix at its head. The gorge is about 25km in length and in parts up to 700 metres deep.
The gorge attracts visitors for a whole host of reasons. The majority just love to drive along what has to be one of the most spectacular roads in France. It certainly makes for a superb day out cruising, particularly if you can let the hood down.
Others are drawn to the beautiful Lac Saint Croix where you can hire pedaloes (the children love the ones with slides attached) or canoes and head into the mouth of the gorge.
Walkers are also to be found here as there are many fabulous marked pathways along various parts of the gorge. Perhaps the most impressive are the climbers who scale the vast, sheer flanks of polished limestone. On the more extreme level you will find parascending, canyoning and bungi jumping.
For a good number of people the gorge is a place to walk down from a suitable entry point with picnic gear and chairs then fins a peaceful spot to relax by the crystal clear water of the Verdon river.
