Generalife Gardens, Andalusia, Spain are part of the Alhabra Palace complex in Granada but can be visited separately.
The Generalife gardens are particularly incredible as they are on top of a hill yet the main feature is water, which somehow has to be managed, yet these gardens were established back in the reign of Mohammed III which was way back in 1302, lasting seven years.
Today the gardens are beautifully maintained with magnificent flower beds and the water flows through the ponds and fountains, even down the stone staircase banister providing a trickle of soothing sound.
Personally I recommend visiting the gardens in the spring when there is still snow on the Sierra Nevada in the background and the roses are in full bloom. This is a place to dwell and spend time, absorb the atmosphere, listen to the water and the birds and inhale the fragrant perfumes. Try and go mid-week and get there early before the crowds arrive.
There are classical concerts and flamenco performances in the amphitheatre by the entrance during the summer months.
Open daily from 08.30 to 20.00 mid-March to mid-October weekdays, 10.00 to 23.30 at weekends, the gardens visit costs around 6€. Winter visiting hours are slightly shortened. For more information contact +34 902 441 221
It is tempting to visit the Palace and Gardens all in one but if you have the time a more leisurely separate visit can be most enjoyable. Booking a visit in advance is worth while especially in high season.
