French Riviera - Cote d'Azur news, what's on, things to do and travel tips

Spotting Cicadas in the Cote d’Azur, France is frustratingly difficult as they are so well disguised. The shrill sound of cicadas is synonymous with the sound of summer in the south of France, the Cote d’Azur and Provence in particular. Look in the gift shops and you will see ceramic ones for sale all over the place, often you walk through the door and the imitation sound of cicadas begins.Mainly you will hear them in woodland in the hills but you will often come across them trilling in the garden of your Cote d’Azur villa. At first...

Rose wine a Cote d’Azur specialty is so a la mode in the UK at the moment and I can understand why.For many years I have enjoyed a cool glass of rose (pronounced “rosay”) with a meal in the Cote d’Azur in France and have often wondered why its popularity failed to transmit from the south of France to elsewhere.I had put it down to the climate and imagined that because it does taste so good when you are in a lovely warm climate, sat on a terrace overlooking the sea or a beautiful Mediterranean garden that maybe it just...

Gorge du Verdon is the Grand Canyon of France and attracts numerous Cote d’Azur tourists every year.Located in the Var department the gorge is located almost due inland from Le Muy with the Lac Saint Croix at its head. The gorge is about 25km in length and in parts up to 700 metres deep. The gorge attracts visitors for a whole host of reasons. The majority just love to drive along what has to be one of the most spectacular roads in France. It certainly makes for a superb day out cruising, particularly if you can let the hood down.Others are drawn...

Monaco is a must visit Cote d’Azur attraction for any number of reasons, but if are on holiday in the Cote d’Azur you have to go.Personally I have mixed feelings about Monaco but without fail if ever I have friends visit me when I am staying in the south of France I always take them to Monaco. Its just one of those things you have to do.There are four principal areas of Monaco which I think are worth visiting, firstly there is the main old area on the hill where you will find the Royal palace, the Cathedral, the Oceanographic museum and...

Cannes Forville market is one of the big daily markets on the French Riviera. The nice thing about Cannes Forville market is that it is all covered which is great as above all it remains nice and cool! Its location just a hundred metres up the hill from the bus station by the old port area is also very nice as you can combine shopping with a drink in one of the outdoor cafes if you like. You can park nearby but I suggest you park by the railway station and walk across town to avoid the traffic in the centre. It’s a relatively big market with a big...

Musee International de la Parfumerie in Grasse, France, offers a fascinating insight into the making and use of fragrances through the ages and its impact on modern living. The museum has a small temporary exhibition area near the entrance. From there the main exhibition introduces you to the plants, herbs, wood and other elements which make up the primary material of fragrances and how they are classed. There is plenty of interactive material which is particularly good for children. The main display rooms show the history and use of scents and aromas...

Renoir museum Cagnes sur mer in the Cote d’Azur is a gem of a place to visit for art lovers and families on holiday alike.Towards the end of his life Renoir built and lived in a beautiful old villa, named Collettes, set on a hillside looking towards the sea, set in large grounds with a gorgeous grove of handsome ancient olive trees, in Cagnes sur mer near Nice.  Here he spent his last days where despite his great age and considerable physical handicap he continued to produce masterpieces, surrounded by family and friends. What I really like...

Marche de Noel in Cannes is under way and visitors can enjoy the Christmas lights and ambiance of the Christmas market by the harbour. There is something particularly charming about the Christmas market at Cannes, the stalls are set around the bandstand and nearer to the sea there is a funfair area for children. The heady smell of vin chaud, freshly cooked crepes and waffles drifts on the air and being Cannes you can even enjoy a glass of champagne in between perusing the stalls. Its not a very big Christmas market and doesn’t compare with Nice...

Caps de la Presqu’ile de Saint Tropez coastal walk is the most beautiful on the Cote d’Azur in France. Which is quite a surprise given its proximity to one of the best known tourist resorts in the world. The walk itself starts at the end of Gigaro plage near Ramatuelle, which is about 10 minutes drive from La Croix Valmer. From there the walk follows the coastal path for around 6 kilometres until you get to Cap Taillat. From there you return with the option to follow a slight deviation further inland for some of the way. You can carry on...

Fragonard perfumes in Grasse, Cote d’Azur, have been produced by Fragonard, one the finest perfumeries in France, since 1926.The history of perfume production in Grasse is a fascinating one and the Fragonard museum in Grasse is the perfect place to fill the gap in most people’s knowledge about one of the everyday products we care so much about, but know so little.Nearly every day we see adverts on the television and on billboards for the latest perfume from Channel, Hugo Boss, Ester Lauder and a whole host of others. Yes they smell...

Saint Honorat an island to visit on the Cote d’Azur in France, for a fabulous day out on a French Riviera holiday. The island of Saint Honorat is a small, picturesque island which forms part of the Lerins islands grouping near Cannes. Inhabited for many years by monks who maintain a vow of silence and live to this day in the beautiful Abbey. There is a magnificent abandoned fort on the northernmost point of the island from which there are breathtaking views of the Mediterranean sea, the island, the Abbey, the mainland and in particular the Esterel...

French Greek villa to visit on the Cote d’Azur, the Villa Kerylos at Beaulieu-sur-mer is fabulous.Entirely conceived by the ultra-rich Theodore Reinach during the Belle Epoque, on the seafront of the beautiful seaside resort of Beaulieu-sur-mer, the villa Kerylos is a fantastic reconstruction of an ancient Greek palace. The villa Kerylos was at the centre of many “celebrity” gatherings during the twenties and a regular visitor was the next door neighbor Gustave Eiffel who was responsible for building the most iconic monument in France,...
