Val d’Isere is a world renowned ski resort situated at 1850 metres, with fabulous skiing and a lovely atmosphere due in large part to it being predominantly a chalet resort. In 1992 the Winter Olympics came to Val and the Face de Bellevarde provided the men's downhill course. One of France’s finest skiers Jean-Claude Killy grew up in Val d’Isere which now has many claims to fame. It is linked with Tignes.
Chambery is the nearest airport to Val d’isere, it is around 2 hours drive, there are direct flights from East Midlands, Manchester, Leeds, Gatwick, Stanstead, Newcastle, Exeter, Southampton, Birmingham and Edinburgh with Jet2, Snowjet and Flybe. Lyon airport is 2 and a half hours, Geneva 3 hours. Moutiers train station is half an hour.
Val d’Isere is often compared to Courchevel which has a similar clientele although it is perhaps not quite in the same league. Many British clients are attracted to the night life and wide variety of entertainment on offer, a good time is more or less guaranteed. It's not cheap and a bit too lively for some.
The Killy ski area has 300km of groomed pistes, a vertical drop of 1700m, 24 beginners runs, 19 intermediate and 12 advanced. There are a snow park and pipe. Open from end November to early May Val d’Isere enjoys a long ski season.
The ESF Val d’Isere offers a full range of ski lessons and there is no shortage of English speaking instructors.
