Explore the Lasithi plateau on holiday in Crete and discover many beautiful sights and an authentic image of Crete.
The plain of Lasithi is located inland between Helaklion and Aghios Nikoloas. Surrounded by mountains this isolated plateau is a fertile area at an altitude of 800 metres where temperatures are a good five degrees cooler than the coast.
The Cretans have cultivated this area for centuries, the main crops being potatoes and corn. A classic image of the plain is that of the pretty white windmills which are to be found here and there in various states of restoration and sometimes ruin.
Another feature are the small towns and villages such as Agios Georgios and Krasi where you will find the islands biggest plane tree which requires twelve people to reach round the trunk.
The main town on the plain is Tzermiado which is a craft centre specializing in embroidered linen and varios other Cretan specialities.
