Join in the Gualterianas Festivities on a Costa Verde holiday during the first weekend in August.
The Gualterianas Festivities take place in Guimaraes in the Costa Verde region of Portugal (in the Braga district) each year. The historic event involves much drinking and dancing, music, fireworks and processions.
The origins of the Gualterianas festival, or as it is known locally the Festas Gualterianas de Guimarães, date back to 1452 and is dedicated to Saint Walter (Sao Gualter) who in 1216 founded the monastery in Guimaraes.
Guimaraes was at the centre of the formation of Portugal as a country in the 9th century and is a UNESCO World heritage site boasting an impressive fortified castle.
Take a holiday in Costa Verde, northern Portugal and discover the magnificent sights and events of this historic region.
