Chios town is the islands main population centre and the principal aspects are the port and castle which was built by the Venetians. Nearby Vrontados has a claim to fame as it is reputedly the birthplace of Homer. In the south, there are villages associated with the Roman mastic gum trade. In the centre of the island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site the Nea Moni monastery. There are some interesting archaeological sites and the island has a fascinating legacy having been occupied by numerous nations during its history.

Although situated in the east the island of Chios has very similar weather patterns to the rest of Greece. A long dry summer with warm sunny days right through from April to October with hardly any rainfall. In July and August, it does get hot.
