Cezanne studios, Aix En Provence, France. Referred to locally as the Atelier Cezanne it is just one of the many landmarks left in the Aixoise region by the great artist Cezanne who for many was the father figure of modern art.
Cezanne was fascinated by the way light affected the shapes and forms of everyday objects in Provence including the landscape, in particular the Mont Saint Victoire which became an obsession for him.
Provence is an area of particularly clear and vivid light which is due to the many days of sunshine but also the regular winds which blow down the Rhone valley and clear away the clouds. It is this excellent quality of light which has attracted many of the world’s most famous artists to settle and paint in the Provence region.
It’s always nice to be in an artist’s studio, you get the impression that you can feel the atmosphere and influences which surrounded the artist whilst producing the masterpieces which now hang in private collections and museums, there is something very real about the experience where a regular art museum is rather detached. However at the highly inflated price of 5€ per adult you need to really be in to art as however you look at it the content does not merit the price. Walk up the hill 800 metres from the studio and you can see the view which Cezanne used to paint the Mont Saint Victoire.
Cezanne lived all his life in the wonderful city of Aix en Provence and the Atelier Cezanne has been kept more or less as he left it when he died in 1906. There are painting instruments and canvases strewn around randomly, original furniture and ornaments, as it often was when he was alive. The video obout Cezanne is very interesting for those discovering the artist there are also some beautiful hand written letters to Monet. The Atelier Cezanne is a museum but it is also allows you an insight into the person.
