The Cap Ferret is a cape forming a coastal cord situated on the southern extremity of the peninsula of Lège-Cap-Ferret in the Gironde. It separates the Atlantic Ocean and the bay of Arcachon. Famous for its light-house, this is a high class vacation area with nature at its heart.
The peninsula of the cape Ferret has 3000 years of geological history: this is the most recent formation of the Gascon coast. The earth is rich in iron which manifests in the red traces to be found in the ground throughout the region.
Back in the sixteenth century fishermen’s huts were established on the beaches, protected by the point near the light-house from the elements, yet with easy access to the channel and the fishing areas.
The 1860’s saw the establishment of ostréiculture, or oyster farming, which has had a strong impact on the local economy to this day and has led to the emergence of many restaurants offering ultra fresh seafood dishes.
A boat trip (departing from Cap Ferret) around the
Cap Ferret allows you to appreciate the beauty of the bay of Arcachon and the ocean beaches and will leave you with fond memories of your
Aquitaine coast villa holiday.
