Artichoke festival in Cerda, Sicily takes place on April 25th and 26th in celebration of the most important vegetable in Cerda.
The Artichoke is a staple in Sicilian food and the Sagra del Carciofo combines live bands, parades and of course Artichoke based food tasting, it is a major event.
The first trace of artichokes in Sicily were recorded back in 287 BC and they became a big favourite with the Romans as well. Artichokes from Sicily are rich in many good and healthy things such as magnesium, potassium, vitamin C and iron. There are a number of artichoke dishes to try if you make it to Cerda, Carciofi Ammuttanati is one, a dish of stuffed artichokes and Carciofini in pastella is another, this one is deep fried artichokes.
There is even an artichoke liquer called Cynar produced from Sicilian artichokes and distributed throughout Italy. It has an interesting very herby flavour.
