The Gironde area of the Aquitaine region of France is one of the wealthiest regions of France with a long history of producing and trading in wine. This is reflected in much of the local architecture and culture.
The Gironde coast provides a permanent ongoing spectacle. Sea fisherman, birdwatchers and holidaymakers share this natural landscape all year long. The bay of Arcachon and Cap Ferret live by the rhythm of the tide.
The Pyla sand dune, the highest in Europe is climbed by tradition, each year by local families and tourists alike to attain the grandiose views over the sea, the bay and the forest of the Landes.
Throughout the year there are tastings, fairs, balls, diner dances and fireworks displays enlivening the bay. Beautiful villas, many with gardens giving directly on to the sea, like at Lanton, allow holidaymakers to fully enjoy the natural riches of the sweet smelling pine forests, coastal walks, salty tides and oyster fishing ports. Each year there is the Oyster festival.
Inland are many fine chateau and large country properties which are worth visiting.
There are direct flights to Bordeaux Merignac airport from London and most regional UK airports.
