Puglia villas

Discover the fabulous Villas Worldwide selection of private villas with pools in Puglia in south-east Italy which includes a number of the unique Trulli properties which are typical of the area. These white homes with conical tiled roofs offer beautiful accommodation for unforgettable holidays. We have a super range from a luxury villa for four which is well suited for a memorable honeymoon to a large property for twelve.

The Apulia region (known as Puglia locally) is right down in the south, in what is known as the heel of Italy. It is a fairly flat rural region which makes it particularly attractive to cyclists. With the coast on two sides of the broad peninsula of the Gargano Promontory, there is a good choice of beaches many flanked by spectacular white cliffs. With the Adriatic on one side and the Ionian sea on the other, there are numerous fishing towns and villages such as Vieste and Peschici on the peninsula and you can visit the nearby Tremiti islands.

Over half of the olive oil production of Italy comes from the Apulia - Puglia region so much of the land is dominated by olive groves as well as very old forests. Much of the area is incorporated into the Parco Nazionale del Gargano.

Travel

There are two international airports. Brindisi (BDS) which is the furthest south and Bari Palese (BRI) which is the busier of the two. Brindisi has flights to the UK and Switzerland as well as internal Italian cities. Bari has flights to the UK, Germany, and Belgium as well as Italian cities. Ryanair flies to both, Easyjet and British Airways fly to Bari.

Attractions

Along the coast are numerous pretty watchtowers and the Castel del Monte UNESCO world heritage site is a fine example of 13th-century military architecture. You will find it's the image on the one cent euro piece in Italy. The Trulli are the emblematic buildings of the area, with us you can even stay in one. Located predominantly in the Istria valley these dry stone buildings with conical roofs were habitations of the locals. Discover the extravagant Lecce Baroque architecture right down in the heel, such as the Basilica Della Santa Croce which dates back to the 16th century. The Castellana Grotte is a big show cave open to visitors, the other is in Putignano. The safari zoo at Fasano is a popular day out for families with children.

Weather

With over three hundred days of sunshine in a year, the weather is very reliable. In fact, it is not too hot in the summer, with average temperatures around 23 degrees centigrade. Temperatures are warm from April to October with little rainfall.

Time

Apulia - Puglia region is an hour ahead of Greenwich mean time as it lies in the Central European Time Zone.

Books to read

Pan' e Pomodor - My Passage to Puglia by Ian R McEwan is one of those greats about a Brittish couple renovating an old house they bought in the area and all the fun and games involved. Casa Rossa by Francesca Marciano is a novel set in the Apulia - Puglia region amongst others.

Food and drink

Obviously fish and seafood are predominant in the local cuisine along with locally farmed produce such as olive oil, almonds and oranges. The local wines are really worth trying, especially the whites from Locorotondo and Martina Franca and full-bodied reds from Negromaro and Nera. You may like to get Puglia - a culinary memoir by Maria Pignatelli to learn more about the local recipes or An appetite for Puglia by Christine Smallwood.

Eating out

Ostuni is one of the best places to eat out in the region, there is a very good choice here. Alberobello is pretty good too. The local pasta is recchietele (or orecchiette) usually made from durum wheat grown in the region, strascinati is another, they are often combined with fish and meat to great effect.

Shopping

The capital of the Trulli area is Alberobello where there is a wide range of shops, the perfect place for you to buy souvenirs. For inexpensive local white wine try Locorotondo. Martina Franca is the place for elegant shopping, Ostuni is very good too, particularly in the more modern areas.

Sport and leisure

There are lots of opportunities for snorkelling and diving along the coast with the undersea caves and reefs of the Tremiti islands offering something special. There are four very good golf courses in the area. Kite surfing and windsurfing are also popular here.

Beaches

There are numerous beaches on both sides of the peninsula and on the Tremiti islands, in particular, the sea is crystal clear.

Puglia houses what to expect

The properties which we feature in Puglia is amongst the most recently added to our Italian villa portfolio. They are really interesting properties, either converted Tulli or country houses or modern coastal villas. All are of a very good standard and perfect family holiday homes.
